An Unexpected Company

One night, an old poker clip came up online. It was one of those clips that's clearly from the early 2000s - oversized graphics, dated fonts, players who now look much grayer than they did in the video.

Just like me.

I love those clips. There's something about old-school poker that draws me in. The personalities were bigger. The conversations were different. There was just something more personal about the game.

In this particular clip, two poker legends were going after each other preflop.

One had aces. The other had kings.

I'd probably watched the clip twenty times before, but this time something was different.

At one point, the player with kings made an absurd comment:

“Don't be upset. I may have a set.”

Everyone at the poker table knew there was no way he had a set. He clearly had kings. Everybody also knew his opponent had aces. Heck, a couple of players even said it out loud to each other.

But he made the statement anyway.

And just like every other time I'd watched it, I laughed.

Then, a thought occurred.

That phrase would be a great T-shirt.

And for some reason, that one silly thought opened a door. Suddenly, an entire book’s worth of ideas flooded my brain.

Poker sayings. Inside jokes. Things only another poker player would immediately understand.

I could see dozens of shirts.

Then I did what any reasonable person would do.

I laughed about it and moved on.

Except the idea didn't move on with me.

I'd think about it while I was driving. I'd think about it at my weekly home game. I'd be trying to sleep, and another idea would pop into my head.

Eventually I decided I should at least make the shirt.

There was only one problem.

I had absolutely no idea how to make a T-shirt.

So, one Saturday morning, I started researching.

While researching how to design a single shirt, the idea got bigger.

What If It's More Than a Shirt?

At some point, the questions grew.

What if this isn't just one T-shirt for myself?

What if it’s an entire collection built around poker clothing?

What if it isn't just apparel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized the shirts weren't really the idea. Poker was.

What if we created an apparel company that wasn’t really about apparel at all…what if it was a community built around what we take from poker and carry into life beyond the table?

That’s when CheckDark was born.

A community for people who love poker, but also see something more within the game: What we learn at the table doesn't always stay at the table. It follows us into our careers, our relationships, and the decisions we make every day.

Poker is a beautiful game. On the surface, it's about cards, money, and risk. But spend enough time playing it and you begin seeing something else.

It constantly asks us to make the best decisions without really knowing how things are going to turn out.

And life does the same thing.

A Decision I'd Been Avoiding

It just so happened that while all of this was taking shape, I was already at a crossroads in my career.

I knew it was time. I had known for a while that my current role was only for a season, which was nearing its end. I also knew I was scared to actually make a change.

Leaving something familiar - even when you know it isn't right for you anymore - is considerably easier to think about than it is to actually do.

And then, somehow, this crazy idea gave me what I hadn't been able to find before.

Clarity.

And courage.

So yes. I quit.

I quit a job I wasn't happy with to focus on an idea that, a few weeks earlier, had started with me laughing at an old poker clip.

On the surface, I realize that might not look like the brightest move I've ever made.

Maybe it won't be. I honestly have no idea.

But something in me told me it was the correct decision. Not because I knew CheckDark would succeed. I didn't. I still don't.

From there, I launched CheckDark.

Not fully formed. Not a media empire. Not even a company with a community yet.

Just a company with a philosophy I believe in - and an idea I couldn't shake.

What CheckDark Is

CheckDark is a company with ideas. A lot of them, apparently.

But I'm also learning something about building this company that poker has been trying to teach me for years:

I don't need to know every card that's coming to make the next decision.

I do know what I always want CheckDark to be.

A place for people who love poker but also bring what’s learned from the game into their lives away from the table. A place to tell stories, share ideas, laugh at ourselves, challenge the way we think, and hopefully get a little better along the way.

We'll talk about poker. We'll talk about life. And yes, we'll make some apparel.

I'm not here because I have everything figured out. I'm here because I think there's value in figuring it out together.

If any of this sounds like something you want to be part of — welcome.

And remember, all of this started because I was watching an old poker clip and thought:

That would be a great T-shirt.
